Collection: German Danse Macabre

"The German Danse Macabre" is an 18th century allegorical oil painting.

In this painting, women of different social ranks - from Empress to Fool - dance with the dead. The different elements of salvation are depicted from the Fall, through the Crucifixion, to Heaven and Hell. Twelve traditional Dance Macabre figures, from Pope, Emperor and Fool, surround the central image.
